Coastal Hits Construction Milestone Early for JW Marriott at Water Street Tampa

TAMPA — Three weeks ahead of schedule, Coastal Construction paused Wednesday to mark the topping off of the 26-story JW Marriott hotel in Water Street Tampa and serve the 400 construction workers on the job a lunch of barbecued pork and chicken.

The structure topped out at 291 feet above sea level, according to Strategic Property Partners, the Jeff Vinik-Cascade Investment development company for Water Street Tampa. It’s been about 15 months since developers broke ground on the $200 million-plus hotel, which is scheduled to be done next summer and to be ready to host NFL executives for Super Bowl LV in February 2021.

“We don’t always realize how much goes into these projects,” Coastal vice president of operations Brian Lacusky said, so he ticked off a by-the-numbers summary of what the 519-room hotel has required so far:

• 405,299 work hours.
• 2,900 tons of reinforcing steel bar, plus 2,389 tons of structural steel.
• 26,000 cubic Yards of concrete, or about 2,900 concrete truckloads.
• 59.66 miles of wire so far, with another 303 miles to go.
• 840 out of 6,000 total light fixtures.
• Nearly 20.5 miles of low-voltage copper and fiber-optic cable, with 265 more miles’ worth left to install.”
